So what else does PhiDE do?
Our chapter has hosted a wide variety of speakers at these meetings, from former members now in medical school, to physicians practicing both privately and in hospitals, and admissions representatives from area medical schools.
At other meetings, we have had potluck dinners, member presentations on out-of-state medical schools, and professional development sessions with representatives from Career Services.
Outside of chapter meetings, members participate in a variety of extracurricular activities, both as a group and as individuals. Many members participate in group volunteering sessions, and most volunteer on their own as well with local organizations both medical and not. Occasionally, we are also afforded opportunities to tour medical schools and facilities, including NEOMED, OSU, OU, and Akron Children's. We also host group socials at member residences and locations around Kent.
The are plenty of opportunities to take on a leadership role, whether on the Executive Board or not. General members may serve on committees or apply to work as a Chair under an E-board member. Executive elections take place near the end of each fall semester. Presidential nominees must come from the outgoing E-board, but any member who has been a general member for at least a year may be nominated to serve as one of the other four officer positions (VP or Programming, VP of Recruitment, VP of Finance, and Secretary & Risk Management). Officers often go to national conventions at little personal cost thanks to National, University, and organizational funding.
We also have a big-little system in order to foster connections across classes.
